WES ECA for Canadian Immigration: Complete 2026 Guide
How to get a WES Educational Credential Assessment for Express Entry, what documents are required, processing times, and how to avoid common delays.
If your education was completed outside of Canada, you need an Educational Credential Assessment to claim education points in Express Entry. World Education Services, commonly known as WES, is the most widely used assessment provider for Canadian immigration purposes. This guide covers exactly how to get a WES ECA, what documents you need, how long it takes, and the most common reasons assessments get delayed.
This article is for educational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. WES procedures, fees, and processing times can change. Always verify current requirements at wes.org/ca and canada.ca before submitting an application.
What an ECA does and why it matters
An ECA tells IRCC what your foreign degree, diploma, or credential is equivalent to in the Canadian education system. Without an ECA from a designated organization, your foreign education does not count for Express Entry CRS points. The ECA also determines how many points you get: a credential equivalent to a Canadian master's degree earns more points than one equivalent to a Canadian bachelor's degree.
IRCC-designated ECA providers
IRCC accepts ECAs from five designated organizations. Each has its own process, but all produce reports IRCC will accept:
- World Education Services (WES) - the most widely used provider, processes credentials from most countries
- Comparative Education Service (CES) - operated by the University of Toronto
- International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS)
- International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) - operated by the Government of Alberta
- International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES) - operated by the British Columbia Institute of Technology
For regulated professions, two additional providers are designated: the Medical Council of Canada for physicians and the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada for pharmacists.
Why WES is the most popular choice
WES processes more applications than any other designated provider for several reasons. Their online portal is straightforward, they accept credentials from a very wide range of countries, processing times are competitive, and they offer a credential evaluation along with a course-by-course breakdown if needed for licensing or further study.
The WES ECA process step by step
Step 1: Create a WES account
Go to wes.org/ca and create a free account. Select Canada as your destination country and Immigration (IRCC) as your purpose. WES will assign you a reference number that you and your institution will use throughout the process.
Step 2: Pay the application fee
The standard ECA evaluation for IRCC purposes costs approximately 230 to 250 CAD as of 2026, plus delivery fees if you want extra copies sent to other organizations. Express delivery options are available for an additional fee. Payment is by credit card through the WES portal.
Step 3: Identify your required documents
WES uses different document requirements depending on the country and institution. The general requirements include:
- Final degree or diploma certificate from each completed credential
- Official academic transcripts showing all courses taken and grades received
- Documents must be sent directly to WES by the issuing institution in a sealed envelope
- Documents in languages other than English or French require certified translations
Your WES portal will show you the exact requirements for your specific country and institution. Country-specific requirements can vary significantly. For example, Indian applicants typically need to send transcripts directly from the university registrar, while Pakistani applicants often need attestation from the Higher Education Commission.
Step 4: Have your institution send documents
This is the step that causes the most delays. Your institution must send official documents directly to WES, not through you. Some institutions are familiar with this process and respond quickly. Others, particularly in countries with less digitized administrative systems, can take weeks or months to process the request.
Contact your institution directly to ask about their process for sending transcripts to WES. Many universities have a specific office or staff member who handles these requests, and knowing the right contact can shave weeks off your timeline.
Step 5: WES verifies and evaluates
Once WES receives your documents, they verify them with the issuing institution and conduct the evaluation. Verification can add significant time depending on the country. Once verification is complete, the actual evaluation typically takes seven business days.
Step 6: Receive your ECA report
WES sends you a digital copy of your ECA report and uploads it to your account. The report includes your WES reference number, which you must enter in your Express Entry profile. The report is valid for five years for IRCC purposes.
How long does a WES ECA take?
Total processing time varies significantly by country and institution. Realistic timelines as of 2026:
- Canada and the United States: 3 to 6 weeks total
- United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand: 4 to 8 weeks total
- India: 6 to 12 weeks total (institutional verification can be slow)
- Pakistan: 8 to 16 weeks total (HEC attestation adds time)
- Nigeria: 8 to 12 weeks total
- Philippines: 6 to 10 weeks total
- China: 6 to 10 weeks total
- Iran: 10 to 16 weeks total (document verification challenges)
These are typical ranges, not guarantees. Always start your ECA process as early as possible if you intend to enter the Express Entry pool.
Common reasons WES applications get delayed
- Institution does not respond to verification requests or sends documents to the wrong address
- Documents arrive without a sealed envelope or proper institutional letterhead
- Translations are not certified or do not match the original document
- Required attestations (HEC, MOE, etc.) are missing for certain countries
- Applicant did not provide all credentials at once and has to add credentials later
- Documents are sent to a regional WES office instead of WES Canada
- Name discrepancies between credentials and identity documents
Which credentials should you submit?
You only need an ECA for the credential you want to claim points for. For Express Entry, this is usually your highest completed credential. However, there are situations where assessing additional credentials makes sense:
- If you have two credentials of similar levels, IRCC may award points for the combination (for example, two bachelor's degrees can equal a three-year-or-longer credential)
- If you are entering a regulated profession in Canada, you may need additional assessments for licensing purposes
- If you plan to apply for further study in Canada, additional ECAs may be useful for the institution
Adding credentials later costs additional fees, so it is more efficient to submit everything at once if you anticipate needing multiple credentials assessed.
What to do if your ECA is taking too long
If your ECA has been in process longer than the typical timeline for your country:
- Check your WES account for any document deficiencies or required actions
- Contact your institution to confirm whether documents have been sent
- Use the WES customer service contact form to ask for a status update on verification
- Verify that your institution sent documents to the correct WES Canada address
- If your institution sent documents months ago and WES has not received them, request a re-send with proof of mailing
After you receive your ECA
Once your ECA is complete, you can use the reference number to create or update your Express Entry profile. The reference number is what IRCC uses to verify the assessment. You do not need to upload the ECA report itself when creating your profile, but you will need it when you receive an ITA and submit your full application.
Your ECA is valid for five years from the date of issue for IRCC purposes. If your ECA expires before you receive PR, you will need to obtain a new one.
